Bill: Anna’s experience

Bill: So I needed to get a bit of distance to be able to write this, but I have some thoughts to share about Anna’s experience in the hospital. Maybe it’s not so different from what others said in the meeting.
We could think of the energy in the body that went to the patient’s feet and caused pain — we could think of that pressure consolidating in the feet as similar to the energy in the universe that came to a point, rose up in Anna. It was just energy, pressure compacting, causing Anna to take action. There was no one cause; there’s Anna’s DNA, her heritage, her conditioning combined with many forces in the universe that came together, came to a point in that moment resulting in Anna’s actions. It’s not “personal.”
Ron says that “Awareness is impersonal.” But in a way, if Atman is Brahman, every experience is impersonal. Of course, this has been said many times, many ways. Dylan Thomas might say, “the force that through the green fuse drove the flower also drove Anna to yell at the nurses.”
Questioner: If everything is an expression of the totality of causes, how can we talk of a purposeful action towards an achievement?
Nisargadatta: The very urge to achieve is an expression of the total universe. It merely shows that the energy potential has risen at a particular point. It is the illusion of time that makes you talk of causality.
